Etching and Shadow Marks

Etching is either caused by physical or chemical means and affects the screens reflective surface. Sugary substances thrown at the screen and left too long can damage the surface. When this happens, the sugar crystallizes, bonding itself to the surface of the screen and breaking it down. After cleaning, the sugary substance is gone, but the area is marred from the chemical action of the sugar. When viewed at an angle a shadow mark (the damaged surface or etch) resembling the cola splash, Gummy Bear spot, etc. can be seen. Usually when viewed head on with a bright light nothing is seen and picture quality is not affected. Shadow marks can never be removed from the screen.
